The world of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals is ready to venture forward with the new CW spin-off Legacies, and Julie Plec, the creator of all three shows, revealed some exciting new details during an informal gathering with reporters at the 2018 TCA Summer Press Tourtoday.
The panel included Plec as well as series stars Danielle Rose Russell (Hope Mikaelson) and Matthew Davis (Alaric Saltzman). The most exciting news to come out of the panel is that the new show will feature a "monster of the week" format.
As Plec said, "Overall, we will have a big bad that we will slowly hint at. We’re embracing a monster of the week, hence all the monster effects, which I haven’t done before." Russell followed that up by saying, "It’s what’s going to make our show so different and so good."
Will any familiar characters from The Vampire Diaries or The Originals be returning? The panel answered that as well, with Davis stating that Zach Roerig's Matt Donovan (a regular on The Vampire Diaries and a guest star in Season 3 of The Originals) is "still the town sheriff. He’s the town’s conspiracy theorist. It’s good to see him come back in all his glory."
Plec added that Vampire Diaries favorite Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) will be back, and that she's also talked with Kat Graham (Bonnie Bennett) about appearing, who told her, "not right now." According to Plec, she "usually has good luck getting people drunk and doing things they don't want to do. I buy good wine. So we'll see." It certainly sounds like Plec has plans for Bonnie to appear on Legacies.

As for where the show itself came from, Plec says that it came from her "continued love" for the universe that was created for The Vampire Diaries, and the world of Mystic Falls. The show will focus on kids in a boarding school trying to control their powers, as all of them are "cursed by supernatural bloodlines." Plec says that they "are hoping that they "can show the path to them being heroes."
As for the rest of Mystic Falls, the locals think that the boarding school is for troubled rich kids. Plec says that they are having a bit of fun with the regular kids in the town being "townie a**holes." She goes on to say, "Our kids have to suck it up because they can’t fraternize and they are not to show anyone who you really are. In the second episode, they play a charity softball game and they have to lose. But this means kids keep pushing and our kids have to stay in control... which goes badly."
It certainly seems like Legacies will have a bit of the old, and a bit of the new as well when it drops Oct. 25, 2018 on The CW. Things are never dull in Mystic Falls, after all, and for that we are glad.
